Idea 1
Read The Story of Christmas by Patricia A. Pingry (focus on pages 6-7 where it talks about Mary and the angel)
Questions:
What was the big news that the angel Gabriel brought to Mary?
How do you think Mary felt about being chosen to be the mother of Jesus?
What did the angel tell Mary about her baby’s future?
What can we learn from Mary's response to God’s plan?
Idea 2
Talk about announcements with the kids.
Get a magazine, or newspaper and show a few headlines. (if you want to be more up to date. Show a few thumbnails and titles of youtube videos that have good hooks - Mr. Beast videos would work really well)
An announcement lets us know what is going to happen, or what the plan is. In today’s story Gabriel the angel came and announced the plan. Mary accepted the plan and so begins one of the most exciting events of all times.
For older kids, you could ask them to rewrite Gabriels announcement in today’s language or divide the kids up into groups and ask them to come up with the most creative way to give Mary the message that she has been chosen by God to have God’s son.
Idea 3
Read “He’s Here!” on page 176 in The Jesus Storybook Bible by Sally Lloyd-Jones
Questions:
How do you think Mary felt when the angel Gabriel came to her?
What was the special message that the angel Gabriel gave to Mary?
Why do you think Mary said yes to God’s plan, even though it was a surprise?
What does this story teach us about trusting God?
Idea 4
Saying “YES” to God.
In this story Mary said yes to God’s plan. Talk with the kids about what it means to say “yes” to God.
Show the kids the trailer for the yes day video. Just so they can get an idea of what saying yes and saying no looks like.
Make a chart with yes on one side a no on the other. Think of examples of times we have said yes to God and times we have said no. Write them down on the chart.
Tell the kids a personal story of when you said yes or no to God.
