Teaching Ideas

Idea 1

Marshmallow temptation test

  • Give each of the kids a marshmallow

  • Let them know they can eat their marshmallow now, or if they wait until after the video to eat it, they can have an extra marshmallow.

  • Watch this video with the kids

  • Ask them who got through the video without eating their marshmallow?

  • Say this was just a marshmallow, what other things tempt us in life?

Idea 2

Vote on a number of temptations

  • On a large piece of paper list of number of temptations (playing video games, using your phone all the time, fighting with your brother or sister, sneaking snacks before dinner etc.)

  • As the kids arrive, ask them to check off all the things the are tempted to do.

  • Keep a running talley on each item.

  • Once all the kids are gathered, have a vote to see if they can guess which temptation is the biggest (got the most votes).

Idea 3

Temptation object lesson

  • This is a lesson using a 2 balloons, and a number of thumb tacks.

  • It helps you talk about falling for temptation once and then falling for it a number of times.

  • Watch this video to find out more.

Idea 4

Read “The Terrible Lie” on page 28 of the Jesus Storybook Bible.

  • Read the story to the kids when they are standing up

  • Ask them to listen carefully and to fall down when they hear about a time when Adam and Eve aren’t trusting God.

Idea 5

Put pictures of the story in order

  • Tape different pictures on each of the kids shirts.

  • Tell the story again while putting the kids in order as you tell the story

  • Ask each kid to tell you their part (the part that is on their shirt) of the story.

Idea 6

Tell the kids about a time when you were tempted.

  • Ask the kids if they have even been tempted.

  • They some of the kids tell some stories.

Idea 7

Go through the temptation cards with the kids

  • Hide the temptation cards around the room

  • Ask the kids to go and find them (only one per kid).

  • Read through each of the temptation cards with the kids.

  • If the card mentions something about falling into temptation have them fall down, if it is resisting temptation then have them stand up as tall as they can.

Idea 8

Do a relay race with the kids.

  • Have them line up on one side of the room and race one by one to a stack of story pictures on the other side of the room.

  • Each kid can pick up one picture and bring it back to their team.

  • Once all the pictures have been collected, ask the kids to put the story in order.
