Idea 1

Relay races

  • Get the kids into teams of 3 or 5.

  • Give each team a towel.

  • Take turns carrying a person on the towel from one side of the room to the other.

  • When the team gets to one side of the room, make sure they switch people so each person gets a turn on the towel.

  • Once the race is finished mention that todays story has a boy that is being carried but this story is different. He wasn’t being carried for fun, he was being carried because he had died.

  • Then read or tell the kids the story from today, so they can see how the boy became alive again.

Teaching Ideas

Idea 2

Watch this video

 - Read out the questions for the kids.

  • Choose one wall as answer A another wall as answer B and a third wall as answer C

  • Ask the kids to run to the wall that best describes their answer.

Idea 3

Play a game where kids touch different objects in a bag and try to name what they are touching

  • Set up a table and put different objects in separate bags on the table.

  • Some ideas to put in the bags might be, jello, cooked spaghetti, canned tomatoes, peeled grapes

  • Once you are done playing the game and kids have a chance to wash their hands have a chat with the kids.

  • Say something like, back in the time when Jesus was on earth, people could touch things that would make them unclean. For example eating pork was unclean, and so they didn’t eat it, or touching someone who was sick was unclean. Touching someone who was dead or even the bier was also unclean. I think Jesus cared so much about helping this lady who had lost her son, that He was willing to do things that people thought were unclean.

Idea 5

Talk about feelings.

  • Sit in a circle with the kids and lay out a bunch of feelings flash cards before you begin telling the story.

  • Talk about a number of the flash cards, which one is happy, which one is sad? How would you feel if you feel down and hurt your knee? How would you feel if your good friend came over to play for the day?

  • Then tell them the story of the woman whose son died. Stop at different parts of the story and ask the kids how do they think this woman feels? Ask them how she feels as her son is being carried out, when Jesus tells her “don’t cry”, and when Jesus gives the boy back to his mother alive.

  • Let them choose different cards to show how this woman would feel at each of these points.

  • Lay all the cards out that the kids chose in order and go through all the feelings with the kids. Talk about how Jesus took this woman from being very sad to being very happy.

Idea 4

Have a chat with the kids about things that make us sad.

  • Make a list together of things that make us sad.

  • Put things down on the list like people getting sick, not having enough to eat, fighting, people dying all the things that make us sad.

  • Explain to the kids, that one day, these things won’t make us sad anymore because they won’t happen. Jesus did some of these miracles on earth to show us what things will be like in heaven. One day, Jesus will come back and make all things right, and there will be no more sadness.
