The Sermon on the Mount

Matthew 5-7

Teaching Videos

Idea 1

Talk about things that are the best.

  • Give the kids a chance to vote on what they think is better.

  • Ask for two options of the best movies they have ever seen - then let them vote.

  • Ask for two options of the best book they have ever read - then let them vote.

  • Ask for two options of the best sport to play - then let them vote.

  • Use this to introduce the Sermon on the Mount. Tell the kids that some people say this is the best teaching that has ever been given and they can learn about it and decide for themselves.

Teaching Ideas

Idea 2

Read “The Singer” on page 228 in The Jesus Storybook Bible

Questions:

  1. Why don’t the birds need to worry about food?

  2. Why don’t flowers need to worry about clothes?

  3. Who is more important than birds or flowers?

  4. What is God’s song?

Idea 3

Set up stations to learn about different parts of the Sermon on the Mount.

  1. Set out some banner paper to make a list (let the kids know that the sermon begins with a list). Make a list of the people in the world who they think are the most blessed. Hopefully they will make a list of people who they think are really important. At the end of making the list, cross it out and say that this list is different. Jesus says the people who will be blessed are the ones having hard times, or are sad.

  2. Make some popcorn. Put salt on some and not on others. Ask the kids which popcorn they like better? You can also mention that salt heals cuts and infections as well. Tell the kids that Jesus says we are the salt of the world.

  3. Put blindfolds on and let kids try to get through an obstacle course. Once they are done ask them how they did. Was it easy? Once they are done, tell the kids that Jesus says we are the light of the world. What does it mean to be light?

  4. Set up a praying station. Here kids can pray for people who are mean to them, or things they are worried about. Tell them in the sermon is talks about loving our enemies and a way that we can do that is by praying for people who are mean to us. In the sermon Jesus also says “don’t worry”, so we can tell Jesus all the things that we are worried about and leave it with him.

Idea 4

Read “Jesus Teaches on a Mountain” on page 318 in The Beginners Bible

Questions:

  1. Are you more important than flowers?

  2. Are you more important than birds?

  3. Who takes care of you?

Idea 5

Tell the kids your favourite part of the Sermon on the Mount.

  • Let them know what it is your favourite part and how you can relate it to your life.
